Weekend Workshop with Doug Keller

Weekend Workshop with Doug Keller
February 12 - 13, 2010
Entire Weekend: $125
Friday and Saturday Evening Sessions: $70

Friday Evening: All-Levels Asana Practice Simple Actions, Profound Effects
A few simple actions in asana provide for the well-being of the sacrum, low back and hips, as well as the foundation for healthy shoulders! This simple and accessible asana practice will focus on finding our core and providing this support in all types of asana. An all-levels practice with vinyasa, Standing Poses, mild Backbending and Forward Bending. This session will bring new depth to your practice, and will also provide a great introduction to the topics to be covered in depth during the teacher training session on Saturday!
2 hours: 6:30-8:30pm — $40

Saturday Afternoon Teacher Training Session: THE SHOULDERS - In Depth
The shoulders present one of our greatest and most complex therapeutic challenges. The shoulder girdle oats upon layers of muscle and relies upon a delicate balance of tone between the many muscles that guide its movements. Teachers need simple and specific tools for assessing the weaknesses and strengths of the muscles fundamental to shoulder health, and simple exercises that can be integrated into asana practice. This session will provide these tools, and explore the role of marma in upper body health, and will be of enormous help to teachers or experienced students working with — or through — shoulder problems.
3 hours: 12:00-3:00pm — $60

Saturday Evening — The Inner Thread of the Self
The spiritual purpose of hatha yoga has always been to renew our awareness of our own Prana — the breath, the life force — to a level of awareness at which it moves through a fine thread at the center of our being. From here, our awareness expands and unfolds into a greater, more intuitive and heartfelt way of being. The specific emphasis of the hatha yogis from the 9th century onward transformed and deepened the understanding of Prana at the center of the yoga tradition. This will be a session of guided pranayama and meditations focusing on our awareness not just of the breath, but of Prana. We’ll include consideration of the role of the Prana — and especially of ‘Udana Vayu’ — in the yoga tradition from the Vedas and Upanishads onward, and will also relate the process of awakening through pranayama to the Christian mystical process of inner breakthrough and birth: its significance, not as a religious concept, but as a path to personal renewal through inner practice.
2 hours: 4:30-6:30pm — $40
