Wednesdays, 8:15pm - 9:15pm
October 1 - 22, 2008 (October 1, October 8, October 15, October 22)
Meditation is a journey towards living our lives mindfully as we shine the light of awareness on all aspects of our lives. Through meditation we gently train ourselves to be awake and alive. In this class we will explore various practices of sitting meditation, guided meditation and walking meditation. You will be encouraged to develop a personal meditation practice. It is by sitting still that we come to know who we are. No meditation experience required, just an open mind. This class will not include yoga, but we will do some gentle stretching to make sitting more comfortable.

Founded in 1999, Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center offers weekly opportunities for meditation and mindfulness practice in Takoma Park and Silver Spring, Maryland, Chevy Chase, DC - and now Columbia, Maryland - as well as classes and workshops focused on practicable methods of integrating mindfulness meditation with work, meaningful relationships, and the challenges of everyday life.
The Mindfulness Practice Evening will begin each Sunday at 6:30
pm with sitting and walking meditation, a welcome and introductions,
and a short program which may be a talk, a guided meditation, or
a presentation. The program will be followed by a group discussion
focused on bringing mindfulness into our lives, families, work,
and society. After a wrap-up and announcements, the evening will
end at 8:30pm. (A Still Water orientation will be on the first Sunday
of each month, beginning at 6:00 p.m.) Newcomers and experienced
practitioners are always welcome.
The Still Water Mindfulness Practice Center's mission is to nurture all who wish to practice Mindfulness. We are part of a world-wide network of communities inspired by the teachings and practices of Thich Nhat Hanh, a widely-known Vietnamese Buddhist monk, author and activist. We are also incorporated as a religious non-profit corporation in the state of Maryland.
Zen Training at the Yoga Center of Columbia continues to evolve in a gradual and organic way, but begins with the Foundations of Meditation Course (usually offered in the Fall, Winter and Spring sessions). More than an introduction to meditation, it is a comprehensive exposure to the history, techniques, difficulties and possibilities in this ancient and transformational practice.
Students who complete the Foundations Course are then eligible to take up a more advanced exploration of practice in the form of the Essentials of Zen class which generally meets during the Summer session. As more students complete basic Zen training, opportunities for practice in community with others as part of the Zen Community of Columbia will evolve as well.
